We have players here from literally all over Europe - Spain, Poland, Croatia, the UK, Germany and of course the host nation Austria have all put up their various contenders in impressive numbers. The board currently says 285 runners, and with cash buy-ins still trickling in we're on track to sell out this event.
One player has come further than most, though. A gentleman with a suspiciously American accent accosted me on the tournament floor to tell me that I'd been good enough to recharge his iphone three years in a row at the WSOP, and asked me my name. I must confess that I have little recollection of my good deed (or actually very much of the WSOP at all, now I think of it) but I was delighted to make his formal acquaintance.
Our American is one Mr. Rob Perelman, a mere whippersnapper with an extremely impressive string of poker results to his name, all of them from tournaments in North America. I asked him (with all due respect) what he was doing so far from home. He shrugged: "I was travelling, and I heard there was a poker tournament..." Fair enough, Mr. Perelman, fair enough. We wish our intercontinental traveller the best of luck here in Vienna.
